An interesting whistleblower lawsuit filed recently by a former employee claims that biotech company Genentech put participants in a cancer drug trial at risk by ignoring federally mandated protocols. The employee, Juliet Kniley, a former senior clinical program manager, alleges that her supervisors circumvented protocols in an effort to meet drug approval deadlines set by Genentech’s parent company, Roche. Kniley alleges that the failure to follow the protocols put the participants of the trial “at unnecessary risk of death and injury,” and that she was fired after she complained about the company’s actions. According to Kniley, Genentech was motivated by a concern that Roche would take the drug away from Genentech if it did not meet its deadlines. Genentech has denied the allegations.
